How to Choose the Right Kids’ Bike: A Complete Size Guide
Aztecs Bikes | April 11 2026Your child's first proper bike is a big deal. Get it right, and they'll be begging to go out riding every weekend. Get it wrong, and it'll gather dust in the shed. This guide will help you choose the right size, the right type, and a bike that's actually built to last.
🚲 Why a Good Bike Matters
It's tempting to grab a £60 kids' bike from Argos or Amazon, especially when your child spots a Spiderman bike and nothing else will do. We get it. But as mechanics, we've built those budget bikes on the workstand, and the problems show up before they even leave the shop. Heavy steel frames, brakes small hands can't reach, wheels that go out of true straight away. Your child ends up fighting the bike instead of enjoying it.
A properly designed children's bike is a different experience altogether. Brands like Ridgeback engineer their kids' bikes for small riders from the ground up: lightweight aluminium frames, brake levers sized for little fingers, and geometry that keeps them upright and confident.
Good kids' bikes also hold their value. A Ridgeback bought for £250–£350 will sell for £150–£200 on Facebook Marketplace a couple of years later. And if you've got younger siblings coming up behind, it'll survive being handed down two or three times. The real cost per child often works out less than a supermarket bike that goes to the tip after 18 months.
🛡️ Safety: What Actually Matters
Your child's safety is non-negotiable. Here's what to look for:
- Brakes they can reach. If small hands can't squeeze the levers, the brakes might as well not be there. Ridgeback uses adjustable short-reach levers on all their children's bikes.
- Standover clearance. When your child stops suddenly, they need a foot down safely. At least 2–3 cm between them and the top tube. A bike that's "a bit big but they'll grow into it" is a bike that's going to cause a painful moment.
- Weight. A 15 kg steel bike is nearly half the body weight of a typical 5-year-old. Ridgeback's aluminium frames come in at 7–10 kg, which is a night-and-day difference in handling and confidence.
- Reliable components. Wheels that stay true, tyres that grip, chains that don't slip. Not glamorous, but these prevent the sudden mechanical failures that cause crashes.
📏 How to Measure Your Child for the Right Size
Forget age. Two six-year-olds can be 15 cm apart in height. The only reliable way to size a kids' bike is to measure. You need two numbers:
Inside leg (inseam): Stand your child against a wall in bare feet, place a hardback book between their legs (spine up), and measure from the top of the book to the floor. This determines standover clearance.
Standing height: Floor to the top of their head, standing straight. This confirms the wheel size bracket.
"Ridgeback's sizing is based on the same growth data used in the NHS Red Book (your child's Personal Child Health Record). If you've got your child's latest height from the Red Book, you can match it directly against the Ridgeback size chart below for an accurate fit."
📊 Kids' Bike Size Guide by Wheel Size
| Wheel Size | Age (approx.) | Rider Height | Inside Leg | Ridgeback Models |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14" | 3–5 | 95–110 cm | 35–42 cm | Honey, Dimension 14, MX14 |
| 16" | 4–6 | 105–120 cm | 40–50 cm | Melody, Dimension 16, MX16 |
| 20" | 6–9 | 115–135 cm | 50–60 cm | Harmony, Dimension 20, MX20 |
| 24" | 8–12 | 130–150 cm | 60–72 cm | Dimension 24 |
Between sizes? If your child is on the boundary, think about their confidence. A cautious rider will feel safer on the smaller wheel; a bold rider can often handle the bigger one. Not sure? Send us a message on WhatsApp with your child's height and inside leg and we'll tell you exactly which size to go for.
🔍 Understanding the Ridgeback Ranges
Ridgeback doesn't make one kids' bike and slap different stickers on it. They have distinct ranges for different kinds of riding:
| Range | What It Is | Best Terrain | Gears | Ideal For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dimension | All-rounder | Roads & light trails | Single / 6–7 speed | Everyday riding & school run |
| MX | Mountain bike | Off-road & trails | Single / 6–7 speed | Mud, adventure, rough terrain |
| Honey | First bike | Pavements & parks | Single speed | Very first pedal bike (14") |
| Melody | Step-through | Pavements & parks | Single speed | Easy mount/dismount (16") |
| Harmony | Step-through | Roads & paths | 6 speed | Longer rides & hills (20") |
👶 14″ Wheel Bikes (Age 3–5)
This is where it all begins. Single speed, easy brakes, and a frame light enough that they can pick it up themselves.
- Ridgeback Honey – Low step-through frame, around 8.4 kg. A gorgeous first bike that's easy to get on and off. Best for very first riders.
- Ridgeback Dimension 14 – Unisex all-rounder with V-brakes front and rear. Same lightweight aluminium, just with a more traditional frame shape. Best for everyday riding.
- Ridgeback MX14 – Knobbier tyres and a slightly more robust build for little daredevils who want grass, gravel, and light trails. Best for adventurous first riders.
🚴 16″ Wheel Bikes (Age 4–6)
Your child can pedal and steer. A 16″ bike gives them more room to grow and a bit more speed.
- Ridgeback Melody – Step-through 16″ with no gears to worry about. Great for kids moving up from a first bike. Best for easy-mount riders.
- Ridgeback Dimension 16 – Our most recommended 16″ bike, full stop. Geometry designed for children, comfortable riding position, reliable V-brakes. Best for everyday versatility.
- Ridgeback MX16 – Off-road tyres and a sturdy build for weekend warriors. A proper little mountain bike. Best for trails, dirt paths, and mud.
🏔️ 20″ Wheel Bikes (Age 6–9)
This is where things get exciting. At 20″, most Ridgeback bikes gain gears, which means hills, longer rides, and real independence.
- Ridgeback Harmony – Step-through 20″ with 6 gears. Introduces shifting with a simple twist-grip they'll pick up in minutes. Best for longer rides and gentle hills.
- Ridgeback Dimension 20 – If we could only stock one kids' bike, this would be it. Light, geared, reliable. Handles the school run and weekend family rides equally well. Best for everything.
- Ridgeback MX20 – Chunky tyres, proper gears, and a slightly forward geometry for the child eyeing up trail centres. Best for off-road and future mountain bikers.
🏆 24″ Wheel Bikes (Age 8–12)
Ridgeback Dimension 24 – Where children's cycling meets adult-level quality. Wider gear range, components that mirror a proper adult bike, and a frame built for 10+ mile family rides. The last kids' bike before an adult frame.
✅ 5 Things Every Parent Should Know
- Don't buy big "to grow into." An oversized bike is dangerous. Your child can't control it, can't stop safely, and will quickly decide cycling isn't for them. Buy the right size now, sell it and upgrade when they're ready.
- Weight matters more than you'd think. A bike should be no more than 30–40% of your child's body weight. This is the single biggest reason to avoid cheap steel-framed bikes.
- Gears aren't always better. Under 20″ wheels, single speed is usually the right call. Fewer things to go wrong, less to confuse a young rider.
- Message us if you're unsure. Send your child's height and inside leg on WhatsApp and we'll recommend the right size straight away.
- Think long-term. A £300 Ridgeback that lasts two children and sells for £150 costs £75 per child. A £80 supermarket bike that lasts 18 months costs £80 per child. The maths speaks for itself.
