Bike Insurance in London: Worth It or a Waste of Money?
Aztecs Bikes | April 19 2026You lock your bike up outside, nip into the shop for ten minutes, and come back to find the lock cut and the bike gone. It happens constantly in this city. London recorded around 14,900 bicycle thefts in a single twelve-month period, and that's only the ones reported to the police. The majority of victims don't bother.
So the question isn't really whether bike theft is a problem in London. It clearly is. The real question is whether insurance actually protects you, or whether it's just another thing that sounds good on paper and lets you down when it counts.
Short answer: it depends entirely on what you're relying on. Most cyclists we speak to think they're covered. Most of them aren't. Here's why.
Myth 1: Your Home Insurance Covers Your Bike
This is the most common assumption we hear. It's not completely wrong, most home contents policies do list bikes as covered items. But dig into the small print and you'll find the gaps quickly.
- Away from the home: Many home insurance policies only cover your bike while it's inside your property. The moment it's locked up outside, at a station, on a rack, outside your workplace, you may have no cover at all.
- Excess: Even if your bike is covered, the excess on a home insurance claim is typically £100 to £250. For a £600 commuter bike, you're getting back £350 to £500 at best. And that's before your premium goes up at renewal.
- Value limits: Home insurance policies often cap single item values at £1,000 or less. If you've spent more than that on a bike, and many of the bikes we sell are well above that, you may need to add it as a named item, which costs more.
- No-claims bonus: Making a claim on your home insurance policy will likely cost you your no-claims discount at renewal, which can wipe out any money you recover from the claim.
Home insurance was designed to protect your house. Your bike is an afterthought on most policies.
Myth 2: Your Bank Card Covers You
Premium credit and debit cards, Amex Platinum, certain Visa and Mastercard products, do sometimes include purchase protection or travel insurance as a perk. Some people believe this extends to bike theft.
In most cases, it doesn't. Purchase protection covers accidental damage or theft in the first few weeks after buying something. Once that window closes, you're typically on your own. Even within the window, the claim process can be tedious, the limits low, and the exclusions numerous.
Myth 3: Your Cycle to Work Bike Is Insured
A lot of our customers buy bikes through the Cycle to Work scheme, which is great, you save on tax and spread the cost. But the scheme itself doesn't include insurance.
Your employer’s policy won’t cover it. The scheme provider’s terms won’t cover it. You own the bike, and insuring it is entirely your responsibility. This surprises a lot of people.
Here’s where it gets painful. Cycle to Work agreements typically run for 12 months, with salary deductions taken straight from your pay every month. If your bike is stolen, that agreement doesn’t stop. You keep paying for a bike you no longer own, often for another six, eight, or ten months. And because you’re still mid-way through those deductions, you can’t realistically afford to buy a replacement, you’d be paying for two bikes at once, one of which doesn’t exist.
This is exactly where Laka changes the picture. If your bike is stolen and you’re insured with Laka, we get you back on a replacement bike within a few days, right here at the shop. You carry on with your Cycle to Work deductions as normal, but you’re actually riding again, not watching money leave your account for a bike that’s sitting in someone else’s flat.
What Actually Happens in London
London has the highest bike theft rate in the country. Hackney, where we're based in East London, is consistently the worst-affected borough, nearly three times the London average per 1,000 residents.
In October 2025, British Transport Police announced they would de-prioritise bike thefts under £200 and rarely review CCTV for bikes left for more than two hours. Only around 1% of reported thefts result in any kind of arrest or prosecution.
